Monster Interview with Director Gareth Edwards

monster interview

Gareth Edwards' debut feature begins after the credits roll on alien invasion flicks. Monsters occurs within the usual postscript, as the population of North America struggle to share a continent with 300ft flying octopuses. Whilst it shares surface similarities with last year's District 9 and relies in the same way on home-made CGI wizardry, Monsters frames the backdrop of an alien settlement in a radically different way.
After a screening of the film at BFI Southbank, Monsters' editor Colin Goudie joined us in conversation with Laura Adams to answer questions about a daunting editing process and the peculiarities of guerilla filmmaking with such a grand vision. Goudie describes a loose, improvised and spontaneous approach which left a first assembly edit more easily defined in days than minutes. Overshooting and having the same elements of dialogue captured at different times and in different locations meant that there were countless different stories to pare down. Prior to that marathon edit, Goudie joined Edwards, McNairy, co-star Whitney Able and a sound recordist - the entire production team - on the shoot in Mexico and the U.S. to document its production. As an observer for the duration of the shoot Goudie is perfectly equipped to describe the journey undertook for this outlandishly ambitious project.
